Metrocard
Metrocards are the cards used for subway fare in New York.
This is the first set of refrigerator doors I painted. The doors for Coffee Cup were the first to be pulled from the trash and hung on a wall but the Metrocard image was the first to be painted. The first set was originally intended to just be a nice way to display a collection of magnets but the bold appearance of the magnet covered doors led to the inspiration to accumulate more and to paint them. The inspiration for the subject finally came while riding the subway and realizing that the shape of a Metrocard was similar to the shape of the refrigerator doors. The painting of the Metrocard led to a series of paintings of underappreciated common New York images painted on other common NYC images, disposed refrigerator doors.
  • This door has always been hung in the corner of a room, maybe it's the similarity to bent Metrocards on the subway station floors but it's always seemed natural bent.
  • Metrocard was painted exclusively with Krylon spray paints using hand cut paper stencils on a set thin vintage General Electric doors taken from the streets of Manhattan.

Metrocard is currently available for purchase. Please email for pricing. mrjaymillar@yahoo.com
